This past Wednesday Gypsy Soul got to hang out with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Aaron Camper at Select Lounge as he made his third visit to Baltimore.

February 2011 Gypsy Soul introduced Aaron via Ear Candy to Baltimore music lovers (check out the video HERE) and Dwayne Speaks of Infiniti Entertainment gave Aaron an encore this past December.

With the help of Anshia Tull & Briclyn Entertainment Gypsy Soul has been introducing talent to the area including Mr. Camper.

The show...great, as he performed music from his debut project Welcome To My World (download FREE HERE) including "Take Off", "Welcome To My Word" & " Julia" along with some covers by Prince, Michael Jackson, and Adele.

This past Saturday, January 14^th at K Street Lounge in NW DC Gypsy Soul attended Black Opulence. The pre-BET HONORS gifting suite event showcased many local business owners and their products.

K Street Lounge served as the perfect venue for the event creating an intimate space for soulcializing. While floating from station to station guests could sip on Remy Martin or Qream cocktails or get their non-alcoholic on with a variety of FUZE flavors. While being soulcial I was able to catch a glimpse of Rocsi from BET’s 106 and Park, as well as local celebs Yodit and DC Fab.

Some of my favorite “gifts” from the gifting suite were Tamicakes (cupcakes), Nothing But (hair care), Hair Finity (hair vitamins), and Gold-Diggers (accessories). Other services offered were eyebrow shaping and nail polishing.

On behalf of Gypsy Soul I’d like to give a big shout-out to Kim Wilson for organizing and inviting us to yet ANOTHER great event!

The perfect way to push play on the soundtrack to not only the beginning of the Dr. Martin Luther King weekend but also an evening of celebration for the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was with a live performance from acclaimed trombonist and Hidden Beach Recordings artists Jeff Bradshaw at The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage.

This free event drew out a diverse crowd with a common love for good music. Jeff Bradshaw along with a band of talented musicians created a sound that kept people rocking, head nodding, and hand clapping. Every seat was filled, every free space on the adjacent stairs occupied, and the standing room section became cramped as more and more people clamored to be touched by the big, boisterous sounds of the the trombone.

A special treat of the night was the appearance and performance of legendary singer Maysa. She sang, scatted and garnered a standing ovation from the audience.

The night was full of surprises as Jeff Bradshaw begin to sing an impromptu version of Happy Birthday to Hidden Beach marketing guru Thornell Jones. The audience joined in and Mr. Jones humbly took the moment in flushed with genuine joy.

The night ended in a surprise presentation to Mr. Bradshaw from the Executive Director of the DC Chapter of The Recording Academy, Ms. Wendi Cherry and Thornell Jones. They presented him with certificates of his numerous Grammy nominations from various projects he has worked on.

Bon Appétit, the new project from Jeff Bradshaw is due this March with guest appearances by Raheem DeVaughn, The Floacist, Marsha Ambrosia and others.

There are artists that grow on you; and then there's that one artist that, the first time you hear them, completely blows you away. Friend of Gypsy Soul, and amazing rapper, singer, producer Dunson is that diamond in the rough.

After spending a multitude of years playing in bands of different genres, the Maryland native took the chance to become a solo artist focusing on lyrics and production- and we are so glad he did. His music is eclectic and infectious; that bob your head kind of music; that move your hips kind of music; that sing along kind of music; that "H.Y.F.R." kind of music. It's hard to pin him to a specific genre. His production teeters the line of rock, Hip-Hop and R&B. He looks like an R&B singer, and he raps like a starving artist- devouring each and every beat thrown his way.

2011 was a breakout year for Dunson, having amassed a multitude of new supporters with the release of his critically acclaimed mixtape Creative Destruction 2. 2011 was an exciting year for Hip-Hop, with many new breakout artists staking their claim in the industry, and seasoned vets defending their throne as Hip-Hop royalty. Somewhere in between is where we find Wale Folarin. Ambition is why Wale has been able to tour the United States and perform for the fans that made his sophomore album number two on the Billboard charts in its first week. It seemed fitting that he spend the top of the year celebrating this next chapter of success at home in the DMV.

Wale’s Board Administration artists, Fatz Da Big Fella and Black Cobain, opened the show as the crowd began to fill The Fillmore to capacity. Avid fans and followers, familiar with the up and coming DMV artists, rapped along to the elusive rhymes, while others waited patiently, inquisitively in anticipation of the main event.

Wale's completely packed performance at The Fillmore in Silver Spring on Sunday night featured a welcome blend of chart-topping hits and a growing catalog that satisfied his rapidly expanding niche following. Wale hit the stage to the strains of his recent single "600 Benz," a skyscraper of a track with a booming Ross chorus and shivering string stabs. As the show went on, the energy level grew higher and higher.

Performances of throwbacks like “Chillin,” “Beautiful Bliss,” and “90210″ had the veteran Wale fans screaming at the top of their lungs. While songs from Ambition, like “Sabotage” (which is speculated to be his next single), “Slight Work,” and “No Days Off” were so well known that Wale didn’t even have to perform. And when the backtrack for “Lotus Flower Bomb” began, the crowd was hypnotized. Easily Wale’s biggest record to date, the crowd of hipsters, street dudes and sexy ladies sang along to every word, whole-heartedly. A dichotomy that few artists, old or new, have mastered in the industry. Still, nothing received a more boisterous welcome than the performance of the go-go infused single “Bait.” The crowd was in an uproar; the energy was electrifying.

Though Folarin could use a more polished stage presence, the hour-plus show was intimate and fun. With facetious crowd interactions, photo breaks, and autograph signings intermittent throughout the performance, one thing was apparent- Wale was home, and the DMV was happy to have him.

Last night a diverse and eclectic crowd was literally seeing sounds at the Fillmore Silver Spring as the phenomenal Roots Crew took on the stage. The show opened with "Sleep" and "Make My", two tracks from their latest album Undun. The crowd was pleasantly surprised when Bilal hit the stage where he and Black Thought took us to the How I Got Over album with "Dear God", while P.O.R.N. and Dice Raw rocked the stage on "Walk Alone".

Fans that have been with the Roots Crew since 1994 were also in for a treat when a go-go spin was put on their liberation anthem "Proceed" from their Do You Want More album. The crowd went wild, and it became evident that you were in the DMV as everyone went off to ?uestlove becoming completely in sync with his drums. The instrumentation throughout what seemed like a 90 minute segment was simply amazing where there was a mix of latin, electronica, jazz, and funk providing eargasms for all that were in attendance.

Classic song "Break You Off" was done beautifully and sounded even better live. This was followed by Bilal returning to the stage and literally ripping it apart with his amazing energy on "The Other Side" where he belted out loudly “That’s When We’ll Settle Up the Score” as the crowd chanted along aimlessly. Although lyricist Black Thought obviously held his own, the band members also had their own epic moments, such as the percussion battle between ?uestlove and F. Knuckles, the solo done by Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr." Bryson, and the band rocking out to their own version of "Jungle Boogie".

The long awaited song of the evening was of course "You Got Me" . Electric guitar player Captain Kirk Douglas sung the vocals, while Black Thought graciously spit his lyrics over instrumentals that were remixed to the "Ni99as In Paris" beat. If you were not a Roots Crew fan prior to seeing them at this sold-out show, one could not help but to become one after seeing their live performance. The Roots Crew has successfully mastered the art of having mass appeal, which can be reflected in the assorted groups of people regardless of race or age that follow their music.

And if you haven't been to the Fillmore Siver Spring, the venue is incredible and nice night life addition to the area. Make sure to support consistantly popular shows in 2012.

Take some classically-created soul, stir in elements of rock, pop and jazz, and top it off with a generous helping of old-school funk and you have the flavorful recipe of musical gumbo that Mint Condition fed to fans at Baltimore’s Sound Stage last Thursday night, and no one left unsatisfied.

While the quintet has always enjoyed a loyal following from the 35-and-older crowd, there were several younger listeners in the building to witness how the self-contained band manages to remain a powerhouse in the fickle music industry.

In just over an hour and a half, Mint Condition took fans through a mesmerizing mix of proven classics ("U Send Me Swingin'," "So Fine," "You Don't Have to Hurt No More") and newer favorites from their latest album 7 released on Shanachie Records, such as the show opener, “Can’t Get Away” and the 2008 break-up anthem, "Nothing Left To Say," which proved to be a crowd favorite as they jumped to their feet and sang along.

In the midst of heart-felt ballads and up-tempo jams, the band partook in some monster jam sessions. It may have been a surprise for some of the newer fans to witness live instrumentation and experience the effortless, unspoken chemistry at work right before their eyes, but even the seasoned fans in their midst were awestruck when Stokley and drummer Brandon Commodore battled each other on the percussions, and keyboardist Jeffrey played a phenomenal, pitch perfect solo on the saxophone.

Another highlight of the night was the band’s musical journey through a medley of funk staples like "Atomic Dog" and "Soul Power" before Stokley initiated a compelling (and at times, borderline insane) call-and-response session of croons, growls and scats. Stokely thanked the crowd for coming out, and exited stage right; but fans stood in anticipation of an encore, chanting “MC” loud and harmoniously. Suffice it to say, the band gave the people what they wanted.

"Pretty Brown Eyes," easily the most anticipated song of the evening, was the encore, but it was revitalized with a Prince-like intro before segueing into its signature groove, reminding all in attendance of how far they'd come as a band while, simultaneously, acknowledging how much farther they can still go; A perfect ending to an exemplary show.

This past Sunday on December 18th, Gypsy Soul had the opportunity to attend the fifth annual Kicks for Kids Charity Shoe Drive and Concert. This program, which was created by DMV tastemaker Ian Callender is a collaborative community effort to help support children less fortunate or in need in the DC Metropolitan area by way of sneakers.

WPGC's Sunni and WKYS's DJ Iran hosted the event, while DJ Heat and DJ Lil Mic were the masters of music for the evening. Attendees ranged from all different age groups that all came together for the purpose of serving their community. Harmony Musik and The Board Administration's First Lady MZ Sasha opened the show and were received well by the crowd.

Up and coming artist Pro'Verb also graced the stage and did quite a few tracks including "Don't Be Mad", "Get Money" and "All Up in My Face". Uptown XO and Gods'Illa took to the stage as well and performed songs from their latest mix tapes, and the crowd went crazy when King Pen Slim performed "Goosebumps".

Another dope highlight of the evening was the rap cypher that featured local rappers from the DMV. Adversary also known as our local Mr. 106th & Park killed his freestyle and had incredible energy. The cypher definitely displayed how the DMV is making impressive strides in the music scene and there are a host of artists in this area with impeccable talent. In on other words - we got next.

For the main event, Meek Mill did a brief, but awesome set where he opened with "Tupac Back" and closed with his current hit singles "House Party" and "Imma Boss". Black Alley closed the show and they were well worth the wait. During their set celebrity artist and great friend of Gypsy Soul Demont Peekaso did a live painting and as always the band delivered an awesome performance. Their lead singer always brings it on stage and her energy is contagious.

Overall, the Kicks for Kids Charity Shoe Drive and Concert was a great event. By coupling music with acts of service the program was able to donate 500 pairs of shoes ultimately impacting a child this holiday season.

Period point blank he conquered me from the moment he stepped through the door. Big smile [it was genuine], a welcoming hand on the arms of fans [very natural] as he strolled through...he pretty much won the atmosphere over.

Carl Thomas was in Baltimore on Tuesday to bring attention to his new project Conquer, just released on Verve, with a cd signing at Sound Garden.

I haven't ran into to many egos while encountering artists but it still continues to shock me [in the best of ways] how personable, sincere, funny, down right supa cool Carl Thomas was.

He signed cds and posters for each fan that stood in line and left his seat to take personal pictures. His chit chat wasn't forced, his smile welcomed everyone who took the time to support him. Carl Thomas truly occupied the moment.

After the signing he did an interview and interacted with us. He took the time to answer questions in depth. We talked about dogs, Roy Ayers, and his study of great musicians both widely known as well as obscure. The interaction was fantastic. He was a joy to SOULCIALIZE with fa sho!

I was stuck on Emotional [that is one perfect album] but Conquer is taking me over. Carl said that this album is about "Hero Music", he described it as being full of "winning" moments and experiences of "victory". I would have to agree and if you havent picked up the album yet its not too late to get won over!

The EP is produced entirely by Kuddie Fresh and is both of their first times working together exclusively on a project and Christmas music in general.

Earlier this week we attended an extraordinary Red Bull event, Red Bull Emsee 2011. This event was an invitation only freestyle battle hosted by The Trill OG: Bun B and judged by Joe Budden, Big K.R.I.T, and my personal favorite of all time Devin The Dude. With Tunes by DJ Alize.

Let me just say that Red Bull hit it out of the park with the production of the DC event. From the graphics, stage setting, and organization, everything was thought out and refined. Now the battle participants are another story...Im not sure who was in charge of the invitations but at least half of the 8 contestants were wack..yeah WACK. But the event as a whole was great, it was 8 Mile DMV style.

But let me give a glimpse of the night:

DJ Alize opened the show for a good hour with a phenomenal mix of hip hop and rap (yeah people, there is a difference). From Biggie to Jay-Z, Bone Thugs In Harmony and Easy E to 2 Pac, Wu Tang (which he only played like one bar of "Triumph"...c'mon son you cant do that! ), Dom Kennedy, Pac Div, 8 Ball & MJG, Dr. Dre, Pharcyde, Talib Kweli, DC hometown heros Gods'illa & Phil Ade, and even some go-go where he had the whole crowd crooning "Keep It Gangsta"....phenomenal mix.

Then we were greeted by Bun B who actually made a very engaging host who wasnt afraid to regulate the at times unruly crowd. After the judges were introduced we finally met the battlers- Flex Matthews, Awthentik, Ice Villain, D'Meitz, Trigga Tay, Adversary, Grande Marshall, and Pro'Verb.

The first round rappers went head to head and had to include visual cues in their freestyle and this is when the wackness came out. I think at time there were more boos than cheers as we listened to the words these dudes put together. *Side note* where the heck were the female "emsees"?

The rightful winners went to the next round that included specific words that were to be placed in their rhymes. My favorites of the night included finalist Adversary & winner D'Meitz.

In between rounds we were treated to performances by the judges. Devin The Dude live made my week!

The event was filmed and there was mention of it being on tv but the details are fuzzy but we will keep you updated!

Tuesday night was a night of FIRSTS. It was the first time I had ever seen Goapele live and it was the first time I had seen a show at the new Baltimore music venue Sound Stage.

Though the show wasnt sold out, the room was filled with people in a manner reminiscent of Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis...and I liked it. I was wondering when someone with a venue would take a cue from that popular spot and put a Baltimore twist on it.

Satisfied with my seat, Shirley Temple, and chopped salad [yes Sound Stage has a great menu too] I was ready for Goapele.

The lights dimmed and she hit the stage and opened with the beautiful "First Love". Not only is her voice strong and consistent with her album, the system at the Sound Stage is fantastic! Just the clarity and musical effects totally enhanced the show.

From there she gave a great look at her new album Break Of Dawn by performing one of my personal album favorites "Undertow" as well as "Play", "Tears On My Pillow", "Money", and "Milk & Honey", another favorite of mine.

A very note worthy aspect of her show were the wonderful transitions. She touched on a little Prince and even some Boosty [baby]. And her band...well I think I would go to just hear them play if they came back, they rocked.

She even reached back in time and pulled out "Romantic" from the first album.

Goapele gave plenty more but if you werent there, make sure you get a ticket for next time.

The day before performing to a SOLD OUT crowd at the Baltimore Sound Stage, Stax artist Lalah Hathaway met with fans who were excited to see her face to face.

Her genuinely sweet personality lit up the Baltimore independent retail music store Sound Garden as she took the time to speak with fans as she signed freshly bought cds of her new project Where It All Begins and posters.

The interaction that surprised me most was with children. She spoke to them, asked their names, how they were doing in school and she was really interested.

As fans waited, in a line that almost went out the door of the venue, they listened to the album they just purchased as it played over the sound system and she danced to her music as well...a great sign that she loves her work lol.

Had her Sunday show not been sold out days before I am more than sure that many tickets would have been sold on the spot at the meet and greet, so my prediction is... SHE WILL BE BACK! And Im looking forward to it not only because shes talented but because she seems to be a great person (yup I got all that just from her meet and greet) and over here we are all about seeing good people win!!

If you didnt make it to the Phonte, 9th Wonder & friends show at Sonar this past Tuesday do I even NEED to say that you missed one hell of a show?!? The venue was packed, the atmosphere was live and social [no knuckle heads allowed].

The line up was great [Phonte, 9th Wonder, Median, The Way Team, Rapsody, Halo, Dj Flash] and the talent was STELLAR. Those who were there appreciated good music and rocked all night.

So I wont go into how Phonte & 9th rocked the new ish and took it back to Little Brothers first album [the crowd went WILD]! I wont even go there...but check out the pics below to see what you missed!

Last week I scrolled through my emails and stopped when I saw the name Felicia Pride. I hadn't seen the sista in a while (she use to frequent Ear Candy's often-a true supporter of Gypsy Soul, I found out she moved, pursuing and achieving dreams). You can imagine my intrigue as I opened the email.

To my surprise and delight it was an invitation to an event she was hosting called My Mind Spray, a combination of a soft launch for Corinto Gallery & video shoot for the enhance ebook of Felicia's book, The Message: 100 Life Lessons From Hip Hop's Greatest Songs.

Not only did I want to support someone who had supported me or support another sista doing her thang, but books are kind of a big deal to me...let me rephrase, GOOD books are kind of a big deal to me and being able to support the production and consumption of relevant literature was the least I could do.

Not too familiar with Adam's Morgan, it took me a good half hour to find parking but it was worth it. I walked into the space complete with DJ, guests engaged in conversations on hip hop, others networking and munching on boutique cupcakes & complimentary Vitamin Water.

Hip Hop inspired art by Aniekan Udofia and Kevin Irvin (aka Jazirock) decorated the wall and The Message was a strategic and accessible ornament. Between being introduced to some cool people like Jose the owner of the gallery by gracious host and good buddy Gerald Watson and checking out the art I found a few moments to comb through the book and I was IMPRESSED...but this is Felicia Pride's book sooooo that was to be expected.

I read her take on the songs "Friends" by Whoodini, "Faithful" by Common, "Tainted" by Slum Village, "Umi Says" by Mos Def, "Tearz" by Wu-Tang Clan, and "Ether" by Nas...music and lit together...I was in my own private, tiny heaven!

I got a chance to talk about hip hop and what it means to me...how my first love and I bonded because of hip hop and to this day Wu Tang Clan has a special place in my heart for it. And with glee I purchased a book and had it signed by the woman of the hour.

If you are a lover of hip hop this book is for you. Smartly organized into topics of everyday life, with songs older and more recent. Seriously I may have to go make an itune play list to refer to as I read...that may be AMAZING! (yeah I just got real excited).

Moderated by super-producer Chucky Thompson, the Verve Music Group Recording artist shared with the standing room only crowd her inspirations when writing music, who she desires to work with and her most memorable concert experience. The historic jazz club, Bohemian Caverns was the perfect backdrop for this exclusive and intimate affair.

The Recording Academy better known as The Grammy's held a special event with Grammy Award nominee Ledisi last week and Gypsy Soul was invited to listen in on an intimate conversation held at Bohemian Caverns.

Legendary producer Chucky Thompson acted as interviewer and engaged the accomplished artist with intriguing questions.

The audience that filled Bohemian Caverns were mostly made up of Academy members and peers of Ledisi eager to hear about her journey. Some notable audience members include DC songstress Deborah Bond, singer V. Rich, Gypsy Soul Ear Candy Chronicles V. 3 feature Akua Allrich, and Navasha Daya.

Chucky Thompson asked some great questions that touched on her evolution, her love for DC, Ledisi's writing process and how she stays current with today technological and entertainment trends.

From the conversation everyone could gather that not only is this lady talented but shes playful, fun and FUNNY.

Through the back and forth Ledisi talked about her constant study and reading of magazines to keep current as well as consciously learning the lingo of producers to communicate her music needs better. She touched on how musicians in DC stay "in the pocket" and how their seriousness with their craft and how they love what they do makes working with them special to her.

As for who she would like to work with in the future...Prince, Q-Tip, Stevie Wonder and the person that surprised me most and that I love...BONNIE RAITT!

This past year more people were introduced to the creation of DJ Beverly Bond, Black Girls Rock (BGR), when it aired on BET. But what most may not know is that the charity was created a couple of years before it was unleashed to the world via television.

It feels good to have been up on the non profit and awards gathering long before its broadcast and to be able to witness a piece of the charity in person was an amazing experience.

Last Thursday, Washington DC gathered for The Black Girls Rock & Soul Tour sponsored by Chevrolet to celebrate black women making incredible achievements and to be serenaded by the likes of Be'la Dona, Avery Sunshine, and Melanie Fiona.

I was curious as to the union between Chevy and BGR and during the night was given the chance to ask Jocelyn Allen, General Motors Director of Regional, Grassroots, and Diversity Communications about the partnership. Graciously she relayed to me that the opportunity to highlight women in the community doing great works and projecting positive images was what sparked her interest and that by partnering with an event such as Black Girls Rock & Soul Tour, Chevrolet was able to be at the forefront of such an incredible mission. Ms. Allen also expressed her appreciation to be able to work with a corporation that supports and encourages the desires to be intimately apart of good community work and organizations such as Black Girls Rock.

The night started with a star studded red carpet graced by BET's Deborah Lee, communications guru Alvin Jones, Housewives of DC Paul Wharton, Big Tigger & Free, along with Omarosa, & Spinderella among others.

Open bars throughout the venue added just the right amount of social lubrication as the house rocked by the all girl band Be'la Dona. One great rendition they did of course was "Girls Who Run The World" by Beyonce...so very appropriate for the night.

Avery Sunshine took the stage and she mellowed the night out with some short references to some big songs like "Lady" by D'Angelo and "Outstanding" by The Gap Band.
In between sets DJ Spinderella, best known for her days with Salt & Pepper, added to the sound track of the night.

Finally, Melanie Fiona took the stage and sang popular favorite "Give It To Me Right" and new release "4AM". Beautiful as ever Melanie had us in the palm of her hands.

Thanks to one of the best photographers in Baltimore City, good friend and all around cool chic, Daria Johnson, I made it out to the annual City Paper Best Of Baltimore Party for the 2nd year in a row.

This year it was held at Baltimore's newest music venue The Soundstage [I think it still doubles at the night club Mist]. Kooky characters, hula hoopin dancers, a bad ass DJ, and fully stocked open bar were certainly highlights of the night.

She left her feather earrings on the night stand, spare tooth brush in the bathroom, favorite pumas near the door, kept her picture on the mantel and just like a gypsy Summer packed her bag and took off in the middle of Thursday night, leaving those of Generation Laser to be the first to feel her absence outside at Merriweather Post Pavillion.

Though not as packed as some may have liked, the crowd that turned out filled the pit, the lawn and a good amount of the center seats. If Summer would have stayed just a day longer she would have seduced a few more to fill in. Regardless, the weather couldn’t stop the enthusiasm and excitement at seeing musicians like hometown favorite Wale and headliner Lupe Fiasco.

Prepared with jacket, scarf, and hot coffee I settled in to take in what I knew was sure to be another great live show presented by the good folks at CD Enterprises.

THE WARM UP

One great thing I have come to expect from a CD Enterprise show is that it will begin on time and this show was no different. Various hosts throughout the night were from the major radio stations that helped to promote the show. Both WKYS and WPGC kept the show moving.

Sarah Green, a young lady on the road with Lupe Fiasco, opened the show with a few songs that kept the people who came early occupied.

UK artist, Tinie Tempah picked up the energy and performed songs that included "Frisky", "Till Im Gone", and "Pass Out". With just himself and a DJ he rocked the crowd. Admittedly, I hadn’t heard much of his music and it seems I was the only one because Tinie Tempah’s last song "Written In The Stars" was sung pretty much entirely by the crowd as the dj cut the music and Tinie directed the audience, amused that they knew the lyrics. I was impressed and plan to dive into his discography very soon.

Phil Ade was added to the line up last minute in place of Big Sean. Being a relatively new artists, this show was a very good look to build his fan base and he took full advantage. He and his DJ brought a hungry intensity to the stage and caught my attention off the first song. Despite the fact that most of the crowd didn’t know him, his vigor won them over and being from Maryland didn’t hurt in connecting to the audience. Plus to top it all off, his 368 cohort Raheem DeVaughn made an appearance and added that extra co-sign.

Things took a sexy turn as Miguel made his way to the spotlight. With a live band to back him he brought the only r&b of the night. Singing a Kanye cover of "All Of The Lights", "All I Want Is You", "Quickie" and "Sure Thing" he kept the crowd content while they waited patiently for Wale & Lupe. Though Miguel had a passionate set full of energy, the crowd just really wasn’t reflecting it…but my guess is that most of them were frozen as the temperatures continued to drop.

Finally Wale was introduced and the place went wild for the hometown hero and was the first time during the night that everyone on the floor, the seat and the lawn were on their feet. From "Chillin" to "Beautiful Bliss" he had the crowd hype. Like a true entertainer he had wonderful crowd interaction, even inserting himself in the front row of the crowd as if he was a fan. The Maybach Music artist has figured out the way to get his album Ambition coming out on 11-1-11 sold is to make his fans into fanatics and intimate interaction like he displayed at the show is a sure fire way to ensure loyalty. His set also included "90210", "4am" with local artist Black Cobain, "Break Up Song", "That Way" and "Pretty Girls". Not sure if he gained a fan in me but most certainly a new admirer.

The moment Lupe Fiasco hit the stage we all had no choice but to move. His band was a force and power coming from the stage captured us all. "Go Go Gadget Flow", "Coming Up", "Touch The Sky" kept the crowd built up. Of course he performed the favorite "Kick Push" as well as "Hip Hop Saved My Life", "All Black Everything" & "Scream". I enjoyed the passion and the potency of his performance. He almost made us forget that Summer abruptly left, instead he steadily continued to encourage us to remember where we come from. Not just because we are both from Illinois, but because I love the messages behind his music I was super psyched to see him perform live again.

Ear Candy is just one of many things that Gypsy Soul does, as a matter of fact, its probably the most public event we do.

Without the help of many we would not have had such a smooth night that ended with gigantic smiles on faces. Tideous tasks of creating tickets to pull the winner for Lupe Fiasco tickets to displaying pictures, coasters and more made the venue perfect.

At every Gypsy Soul event that involved artist we include media interviews to help spread their message beyond the event. Thanks to all the media that participated, your support of Gypsy Soul and of the artists are appreciated.

With the help of Media Minds the sound went perfectly! No doubt the cooperation of the artists to be on time and in the moment when getting things just right helped out tremendously!

It never fails...rain. For the past three years on almost every day that there is an Ear Candy some type of weather disturbance waits patiently for us to announce the date of our event and then the gods conspire to test the dedication of Baltimore music lovers... and on September 8th, 2011 Charm City soulcialites past the test.

In pouring rain, flood warning, closed roads, and power outages loyal fans of good music made their way to Select Lounge in search of good music in the form of Jesse Boykins III, Sophia Urista, and Corey Mitchell. The vibe-celebratory and carefree, it may have been wet outside but everyone was warm with anticipation and complimentary Courvoisier Rose.

The venue was lined with pictures of the Gypsy Soul team through the three years at events, with artists, with each other let everyone know that the team wanted them to share in their world.

Hostess Hiphopcleopatra began by introducing Baltimore artist Corey Mitchell and his performance did not disappoint. With a full band and two background singers he made sure the audience took notice. His energy picked up the pulse of everyone spread throughout the venue.

Next, Sophia Urista, the songstress from New York brought a funk that Baltimore isnt quite use to and won over an audience of new fans. With just a simple set up of a keyboard and vocals, she commanded the stage and flexed her vocal muscles.

Finally, Jesse Boykins III emerged from a hail of smoke through the venue to the stage. With the sounds of his band The Beauty Created we were all lulled into a musical trance... OJ with his horn could have pied pipered us wherever he willed and I swear we would have followed...it was beautiful.

The ladies swooned, yelled, screamed, jumped up and down, waved hands in the air. We all danced as he sung, sang to him as he sung to us. Some with eyes closed as they took it all in and others with eyes wide not wanting to miss a beat. And if Jesse being on stage wasnt enough, he had to come OFF stage and sing with the ladies, putting his arm around them, smiling in their face. A lot of women were in heaven. As if THAT wasnt enough, he took a young lady on stage and serenaded her to his hit Pantyhose. She took to the spotlight gracefully.

After all was said and done the audience had three amazing shows, people won prizes from Shanachie Records, Coors Light, and the highly sought after Lupe Fiasco tickets from CD Enterprises for September 16th.

The 3rd Anniversary of Ear Candy and Gypsy Soul felt GOOD. We had fun, the place was packed, the people were wonderful, the music was great...I can only imagine what it would have been like without rain...

I remember being a freshman at Morgan State University and hearing the voice of Maimouna Youssef as she rapped & sung within a group called Cirius B.

Years later after working with greats like The Roots & Dj Jazzy Jeff, this prolific and provocative woman is blooming for everyone to see.

This is not the album review but rather a preview into her new album The Blooming being released on September 20th. It has done something to me... motivation, contemplation, reflection has hit me from absorbing this album.

Despite rain, hail & traffic [the perfect trifecta to drive people right home after work] some media and a few fans & friends came to soulcialize with Kindred The Family Soul.

The husband & wife duo was gracious enough to hang out the day before embarking on sold out shows in DC & Annapolis.

After a few interviews Aja & Fatin took photos with fans, signed cds and ate an order of Ben's Next Door's fantastic food.

A couple of star sightings took place with Kia Bennett, Fred Yonnet, & Wendy McIntyre, along with reps from The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (The Grammys) & The Sound Exchange.

Recently Ive come into contact with this cool chick named Hiphopcleopatra, she was so cool in fact that I asked her to host the Cultural Stage at The Baltimore African American Festival and the upcoming Gypsy Soul 3rd Anniversary Ear Candy event...sooooo when I heard that the company she works with Task Force Marketing was throwing a launch shin dig called NEXUS I had to support and O I had a ball!! This is coming from a person who is not too much into the party scene but I was glad I came because it was more than a party, it was a networking event filled with local whos whos.

Held at Milan in Baltimore's Little Italy, I spotted several people I rub elbows with or went to college with or just know from the cool nods we give each other when we lock eyes around town like the guys from The City Of Gods, Swen from Energy Theory, DJ Jay Claxton and DJ Reddz, The Street Smart Magazine Crew, and Bmore Fab of The Fab Empire to name a few.

Other notables filled the space including Lil Mo (who had mixtape freebies for the crowd), Paula Campbell, Puppy Da Body, Hip Hop Chef Cookin Tye, and Celebrity Chef Sammy Davis among others.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake of Baltimore even came through...besides sponsorships from Belvedere Liquor & the MTA, guess you cant get too much more official than that.

This past weekend members of Gypsy Soul got tan as we and our media circle braved 100 degree heat to hit the beach in search of The Cool Kids at The Dew Action Sports Tour stop in Ocean City, MD.

Thanks to Green Label Sound, Mountain Dew's innovative record label that supports emerging artists of a vast amount of musical takes, we were allowed to coordinate a few interviews for The Cool Kids.

The Cool Kids were the first to release music on Green Label Sound and are now the first to release a full length album, When Fish Ride Bicycles, on the label. When Fish Ride Bicycles right now is only available via iTunes and has reached number one status on the iTune hip hop downloads. Besides the fact these dudes are from the great state of Illionis (my home state) if Ghost Face rides with them you know their official.

After The Cool Kids graciously sat down with our media outlets and signing posters for everyone, we got a chance to see the FREE beach concert held by The Dew Tour that also featured Kid Cudi.

::SOUND CHECK:: Kindred | Love Has No Recession

Gone from being discovered on Hidden Beach to gaining much deserved significance on Purpose Records and Shanachie Records, Kindred The Family Soul has released an epic album that the grown folks of the world will appreciate but is sure to not alienate musical newbies.

Many artists litter their albums with guest features to mask their inability to carry a project on their own...this is certainly not the case with the new album Love Has No Recession due to release on July 26. Each guest artist superbly enhances the already enjoyable production offered. The level of artists featured along side Kindred speaks to the dues paid over the years and the respect acquired from their peers. I must admit, I was a little weary of Snoop Dog, but his contribution fits. My favorite features of the album include Lady Alma Horton and DC based artists Chuck Brown & Fred Yonnet.

The project opens with a funky instrumental called "The Sheddington" that reminds you of a real jam session composed of fun musicians that I could sit back and listen too all night with a batch of crab legs and some great mix drinks.

Though the entire album is stellar, the romantic in me makes me partial to "SOS", "Sticking With You" and "2 Words".

"SOS" speaks to the adult conversations between couples that many times doesnt happen which leads to confusion. I think this song probably reflects how these two have been able to have a successful marriage and family life...a relationship many romantics strive for.

With "Sticking With You" I melted at the profession of love. "I know that, you know that, we know that its real." Short, sweet, and addictive.

Dont laugh, but "2 Words" could be one of those songs featured late night on the infomercials hosted by Dionne Warwick! Its so sonically savvy that I could see the fans of the early Motown easily confusing this song with a hit from that generation.... "Come on over baby and say your sorry, All you gotta do is say your sorry, hurry up and come tell me your sorry so we can me love." Listen to the song and tell me you cant see it!

I would also like to congratulate Kindred on including a remix...real remix of "You Got Love" feat. Snoop Dog. It seems this new generation of music producers and gate keepers have fooled everyone into thinking that a remix is adding extra people on a song...uh no. The real basis of a remix is to change the production, to make the song feel different. Bravo Kindred and the person who made the decision to stay true to much needed standard that the industry has wavered from.

::RECAP:: Nikka Costa | Artscape

I wasnt particularly excited about this years Artscape but I was pumped to see that Nikka Costa would be performing!

I have been a fan for years and wondered what she had been up to and Artscape helped me to rekindle my musical affair with the siren.

Her afternoon performance in the hot sun was well worth my trip to the largest art festival in the country. After being introduced by high school buddy Rain Pryor, Nikka Costa delivered a RAWKIN show which included tracks "Like A Feather", "Nylons In A Rip", and "Push And Pull". Her band was phenomenal and and did a great job making her Baltimore come back memorable. Especially the trombone player...she certainly had a Red Bull before stepping on stage.

Surprisingly a rack of fans braved the heat to hear her classic vocals take on her most known songs and deliver new tracks from her latest EP Pro-Whoa. I hope that this is just the first of many performances by Nikka Costa in this area...believe me I would do my best to see her live again. Take a listen to "Nylons In A Rip"

::RECAP:: DC ♥ DILLA

For those who dont know, James Dewitt Yancey , better known to the music world as J. Dilla or Jay Dee, is one of the most influential music producers of the current generation of hip hop and soul. His discography is huge and is best known for his work with Slum Village, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Bilal, and Common but major fans know that he has also worked with Guru, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Busta Rhymes amongst many many others. The disease Lupus took the life of this musical innovator all too soon prompting music lovers all over the world to celebrate each year with events including the annual offering of DC ♥ Dilla.

Earlier this week the 6th Annual DC ♥ Dilla took place at the 9:30 Club. If the club wasnt sold out it was damn near at capacity. Even though the performance aspect of the show started after 10PM (no bueno for Baltimore people with 9-5s), DJ Two Tone greeted guests upon their arrival with a glorious ALL VINYL mix of songs produced by Dilla. He set the vibe as I, DJ YZO & Gerald of Art Vs. Commerce had a great time hanging out.

The show began with an introduction from FREE of the Big Tyga Show who introduced the host for the evening, Grap Luva. After a heart felt moment of silence, the crowd was welcomed by Common and his memories of Dilla.

The night started with Maimouna Youseff doing a cover of Common's "Time Traveling" and of course her beautiful voice translated the track magnificently.

Backing Maimouna and all of the other performers was the band Jon Lane & The Players as well as back ground vocalist Alison Carney and J Hill. Let me note that these two vocalist are beasts on lead but are so versatile that they can play the back magnificently by being heard but not overpowering the performer(s) they are accompanying... not many artists are as graceful as these two when allowing someone else to step to the front.

Another notable performer of the night was Flex Matthews performing De La Soul's "Stakes Is High". He ROCKED it! Had I not known these songs were cover I would have swore up and down this was his song...he took it and ran.

Awthentik did an excellent job with J Dilla's "Crushin' (YEEAAAAA)" ...he was so into it he eventually had me singin the hook while chillin with fellow Soulcialista Eff Dot Jay.

Labtekwon along with Emmanuel "Manny" Lewis and Gods'illa were other highlights to the night leading up to the performance I and most of the crowd had been waiting for:
The Pharcyde!

Of course The Pharcyde performed classics like "Passin Me By" and Dilla produced "Runnin Away" and my evening was set. To see live a staple of good hip hop and to hear them at an event that was paying homage to an innovator that still has a vault of goodies to be discovered was an excellent end to a night full of friends and good music.

It has been my pleasure to see them evolve from students at Morgan State falling in love with spoken word to leaders of a new generation of verbal ambassadors.

This summer Writing4MyLife are working to introduce themselves to a bigger audience while giving loyal fans something to be excited about.

In anticipation of their 3rd album No Stage LIVE and the coming tour "No Stage - A Play On Words", this summer, Writing4MyLife decided to give the fans a taste of the work they've done, to prepare all of us for whats coming! Wow Ive known my homie Swen for about 10 years and he finally put me on to the media meet and greets held by Task Force Marketing. My official invite came from Hiphopcleopatra to come hang out with Grammy Award winning songstress Estelle. Accompanied by my photogs Nocturnal Charm and Edith of Diamond Digital Portraits I was all set.

While waiting, I was asked along with some other media folks to get on wpb radio and talk about what we do....not my steez, im more behind the scenes, but my team would have killed me if I didnt take the opportunity to let the world know about the wonderful things we do to highlight art through Gypsy Soul. So I chatted it up with radio host Courtman and really enjoyed myself.

After my impromptu radio debut of the day I was greeted with a lip smackin, finger lickin, just cooked lunch prepared by Food Network featured Celebrity Chef Sammy Davis Jr. Shrimp, grits, sausage with tomatoes & shrimp, jerk chicken, meatballs, red velvet cupcakes, mint iced tea and more helped to break the ice. Delish.

Soon after the woman of the hour came in full of energy and smiles. I could tell she was gonna be supa cool. The session was great and the more she talked the more I wanted to pick her brain. She touched on relationships, collaborations, fashion, family, and perception.

We all know that Estelle has bold taste when it comes to fashion and I was able to ask her about her favorite designers. She named a few but that one I identified with was Vivian Westwood, who she loves because she makes clothes for women with boobs and she makes CLOTHES. We learned Estelle like to be Estelle and that means not having her ass out for the sake of having her ass out lol. Super honest and she has me smitten. I think its about dayum time women realized you can be sexy or look spectacular with clothes on and Im glad that she agrees.

The other question I was able to ask came from Nocturnal Charm about her mixtape with John Legend. As she touched on earlier when speaking about collaborations, she reiterated that she didnt want to force anything and after working for three years on the new album All Of Me, she wasnt tryin to be in the studio any time soon. But she said that maybe just maybe a full album with the two of them may manifest in the next couple of years.

I have always liked Estelle but after interacting with her Im smitten and excited to hear the new album. With this album, take your time with it, play it on a long trip...she wants you to feel it. Become engrossed in her experiences, connect with her, and see how closely your life is to hers. All Of Me is really what you will get of her.

This past weekend Gypsy Soul had the opportunity to accomplish a goal set years ago, to program and manage the Baltimore African American Festival Cultural Stage.

This year under the management of greiBO Media, the Baltimore African American Festival hosted one of the biggest crowds ever. Carnival rides, youth basketball, vendors of all kinds, an extensive variety of food and a diverse offering of entertainment made up Baltimore's 4th of July weekend.

Gypsy Soul has gained a great reputation that we are proud of as being a leader in talent introduction to the DMV area and the Cultural Stage gave us a bigger platform to showcase amazing artists like C Clear, Genesis The Grey Kid, Green Tea, & Yahzarah amongst many others.

With the help of DJ Harvey Dent, DJ Phaze, Hiphopcleopatra, and Walter Maxfield Jones Baltimore got to hear some great music and see some wonderful ethnic talent.

One of the biggest compliments of the weekend was when Chrisette Michelle came to our stage to watch at least two of our featured artists, Genesis The Grey Kid & Kimberly Nichole. The other biggest compliments was when she shouted out the quality of entertainment on the Cultural Stage to the crowd during her performance on the main stage...it doesnt get too much better than that!

In 90 degree heat it takes a strong team to organize and pull off a great show and the team at Gypsy Soul worked through long hours and bad ass heat to entertain the hundreds that visited our stage. Without Will, InTea, Lauren, Ashley, Tanae, & Felecia this dream could not have become a reality. And with out Nocturnal Charm, Zamark & company, Edith, & Quinn the documentation of this surreal moment would have been impossible.

::Recap:: Up AND Up Open Mic

Last week was my first time at Up & Up's Open Mic thats held every Tuesday. By the time 9 o'clock hour hit a decent crowd of about 100 people began to form in LIV nite club. I know what you're thinking...yet another open mic was on deck... but wait this was not and has not been an ordinary open mic (or so Im told and soon got to see). With tunes by DJ JAV I spotted folks dancing (all by themselves), folks in the VIP area, over zealous listeners (trying to rap every line to every song), couples, singles, you name it they were there. Hip Hop group and founding members of Up & Up, GODS'ILLA was in the building promoting their new mixtape hosted by ERYKAH BADU. To top it off there were beautiful ladies promoting the new Bacardi grape flavored vodka...I forgot the name of the drink but I remember it was mixed with grapefruit juice...deelish!

At an open mic I'm not expecting 5 star amenities but the ladies restroom was in was word "inappropriate". The stalls had no doors and no toilet paper!!! C'mon son! I had to go down to the restaurant. Talk about inconvenient! I hope they get that taken care of asap!

Being an educator and social advocate,Victorious Hall, member of Up & Up could be thanked for the $5 cover for educators!!! By then I was sold on it being a great night. Shout out to all educators!!!! Hooray for Teacher Tuesday.

Victorious Hall & Black Boo, hosts, and the house band Mambo Sauce kept the artists and crowd in the groove. Is it bad that I couldn't wait for the performances to be over so that I could listen to mambo sauce during transitions...?

Maybe the expectations of hosts have changed but i thought host were to be attentive to the audience and more importantly the performers...I guess texting during performances has become apart of the job description. I don't know much about hosting events so maybe the etiquette has changed. Correct me please if I am mistaken. **DING**

For the 1st timers they sang the Cheers theme song "Where everybody knows your name" to make the newbies feel comfortable. I must say it was a nice touch.The first act was a singer, the second a rapper, the third a poet, and the fourth a Jamaican artist. Talk about a diverse pool of performers.

My favorite act was a teacher named Charmaine...she sang Jill Scott's "He Loves Me"...amazing!!!! Open mic reminds you about the sheer, raw talent thats out there...this chick did the ad libs and all!

::Up Close & Personal:: Cris Cab | Charm City

New sensation Cris Cab cruised through Charm City to promote his new EP Foreward.

Gypsy Soul with help from The FARM Team set a small get together at one of our favorite eateries, Teavolve which played his music loud and proud over the sound system. Cris met up with media, talked to a few fans and headed to Bourbon Street to play his heart out to a ton of college students.

Cris Cab is a sweetie pie with a great offering of music and we look forward to what the next weeks, months and years bring to his career!

::RECAP:: Anthony David | The Root Festival in Baltimore

Last week The Root Festival dug into Baltimore's West Side right above the highway to no where. In conjunction with Coppin State University, workshops, live music entertainment, spoken word, food and merchandise vendors made up this weekend plus of activity.

Our favorite part of course was the performance of Anthony David and special guest Algebra! The main stage was awesome, the sound great and his singing could be heard blocks away. He performed several songs from his new album As Above So Below and picked up a slew of new fans. For his last song he belted "Forever More" and brought out fellow ATLien Algebra who blew the crowd away. Needless to say the line to buy Anthony David's music was neck breaking (as it should have been).
